5 Seconds Of Summer are set to commence work on a new album this year following the huge success of their March-released fourth album, CALM.

Appearing on the latest episode of The Green Room with Neil Griffiths podcast to promote his debut solo album Superbloom, drummer Ashton Irwin revealed that the Sydney outfit will return to the studio next month.

"I am gonna be such a better collaborator the next time we get in the studio... I'm excited for that because I have things off my chest," Irwin told host Neil Griffiths about jumping from his solo record back into 5SOS.

"I have a creative outlet that does not serve and belong to three other guys. It's just my shit."

Following its release, CALM hit #1 in the UK and at home in Australia where the four-piece became just the second Australian group to have their first four albums debut at top spot on the ARIA Albums chart next to Silverchair.

Despite branching off to record solo material, Irwin has insisted that the future of 5SOS is secure.

"Destroy that awful, awful, awful, construct based on ego - 'Well, he's doing solo stuff. The band mustn't have long to go.' The band has extra, extra long to go, because I'm not lying to myself," Irwin said.

He continued, "Maintaining that balance [of solo material and 5SOS] will be my next challenge.

"When am I gonna do a record with the band? When do we have a mission statement as a band? What's our message?"
