Notorious musician, DJ, motivational speaker and all-round party dude Andrew W.K. will not, as he had previously announced, be a cultural ambassador for the United States in the conservative Gulf state of Bahrain.

The United States State Department was forced to deny that WK would be travelling to the Middle East at the invitation of the United States government, though did admit to their being preliminary discussion about it becoming a possibility.

"The conclusion was that this was not an appropriate use of US government funds," department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said in a press conference.

"I think the conclusion was when they looked at the body of his work that we didn't need to be part of this invitation," she said. "There may have been some preliminary conversations with him. But he is not going to be going to Bahrain on the U.S. government's dime."

In his initial statement issued about the alleged invitation to represent his country in the Middle East, the WK camp was painting the artist as his usual party-espousing self, saying that "the US Department of State in partnership with the US Embassy in Manama, Bahrain, has invited Andrew to visit the Middle East to promote partying and positive power."

"I feel very privileged and humbled by the chance to represent the United States of America and show the good people of Bahrain the power of positive partying," WK himself said about the invitation.

But when it was announced that the trip would not be going ahead, the disappointment was evident almost immediately.

While he has expressed great disappointment about the cancellation of this trip, WK is remaining positive.
