Vocalist, Brent Walsh, spoke to Alternative Press about the video:

"I'm sure everyone has known someone at some point who has struck them as fake--whether they're trying too hard, overcompensating, or simply insecure," says Walsh. "I wrote 'A Spoonful of Shallow Makes Your Head an Empty Space' as a conversation or intervention with such an individual.

It also touches on existentialism, (a theme of many songs on the record) with the main tagline at the end of the chorus: 'If you don't know who you are, you're never gonna get that far.'

While the video's concept may not directly correspond with the song's, I think the vibe and the idea of 'freeing yourself' is spot on and it's definitely one of my personal favorite videos we've put out. Not to mention, it's our first-ever animated video, which I'm a big fan of!"
