Hendrix famously set the guitar on fire while onstage at the Monterey International Pop Festival in 1967 (although there’s conjecture it was switched with a cheaper model moments before it was set alight).

James Wright, who works at Hendrix’s label, sold the guitar for £237,000 ($364,930 AUD) at auction in London on November 27.

According to the UK’s Metro, Hendrix wanted to outdo The Who’s Pete Townshend, who had smashed his guitar earlier that night.

Jimi asked for some lighter fuel. He wanted to outdo Pete,” said Wright . “At the time, it was his favourite guitar and he didn’t want to ruin it”.
