Newly announced Dream Theater drummer Mike Mangini has opened up and discussed his recent addition to the iconic prog metal band, with the musician also paying tribute to former skinsman, Mike Portnoy.

Killyourstereo reported last week, the official introduction of Mangini to the Dream Theater fold.

Subsequently, the 48 year-old, who beat out other noted candidates including Derek Roddy and Virgil Donati, caught up with respected music magazine, Modern Drummer to discuss the recent happenings.

Of interest, Mangini affirms that he has finished recording drums for the band's upcoming studio album.

"My drum tracks for the new DT release are finished. They are currently finishing up keys and vocals. The new CD is scheduled for release in the fall," Mangini said.

Furthermore, the drummer talked of his professional and personal admiration for former DT member, Mike Portnoy.

"I am so grateful to Mike Portnoy for setting the bar so high in Dream Theater’s music. I made a point of playing Mike’s parts specifically for the audition because I wanted to put the music first, not my chops first. I love Mike Portnoy and have a deep respect for what he created with Dream Theater. I feel that I am with true musical brothers now. And I don’t have to explain myself to anybody from now on."
