Chelsea Wolfe features on new Saudade (Chino Moreno) track, 'Shadows & Light'

'Shadows & Light' is a gorgeous yet bleak new track from Chino Moreno's Saudade project, guest featuring the one & only Chelsea Wolfe. 

In 2019, both Deftones and the always-magnificent Chelsea Wolfe are set to release new records. Of course, neither artist has confirmed when exactly we can expect to hear new music respectively. So it's currently anyone's guess other than the generalisation of both albums happening sometime this year. However, the latest from Saudade (Portuguese for an emotional state of nostalgia and melancholia), the ethereal and chill-wave 'Shadows & Light', is a good fill-in for this interim period for fans.

For those unaware, Saudade is a supergroup comprised of Chino, guitarist Dr. Know (Bad Brains), keyboardist John Medeski (Medeski Martin & Wood), bassist Chuck Doom (Crosses), and drummer Gil Sharone (Team Sleep, another project from the Deftones frontman). 'Shadows & Light' is actually only the band's second ever single too, with their first self-titled track debuting way back in 2016. Yet 'Shadows & Light' feels like a great continuation of their eerie tones and mysterious instrumental sounds. Now complete with vocals! Of the two songs, this is the easy stand-out.

Chelsea Wolfe takes the immaculate lead, lending some fittingly moody and gothic vibes to the proceedings, with what also sounds like some more subtle vocal harmonies coming from Chino. It's a dark yet wonderful performance over swirling atmospherics, minimal percussion, subtle textures, glitchy electronics, thick drum hits, and melodic yet screaming guitars. It's a prog-informed post-rock piece; one that shows Chino isn't slowing down his creative endeavours, nor that Chelsea is staying out of the limelight either.
