'Call Back': a long lost nothing,nowhere. cut is finally released

An old nothing,nowhere. track gets it's a proper release. 

If you’ve been paying any attention at all over the past couple years, then odds are you’ve heard the name nothing,nowhere. before. This is the stage name of Joe Mulherin, an extremely talented American musician who seemed to come out of nowhere and bless the alternative/emo-rap scene with his magnificent, scarily honest art. While he has been around for quite a few years, nothing,nowhere. really made a name for himself with his debut LP, 'Reaper', towards the tail end of 2017. Then, not even six months later followed it up with his sophomore effort, 'Ruiner'. Now, he’s a buzzing name in both the hip-hop and alternative realms, and with very good reason. The music of nothing,nowhere. is ethereal, emotive, simple, and also beautiful too. It's made with a touch of nostalgic sadness that finds a way deep into the heart of most who partakes in what this mid-twenty artist from Massachusetts shares so openly. It's so easy to latch onto what nothing,nowhere. does because it's so genuine; it’s not sad for the sake of being sad music, rather a genuine spilling of the heart via song form.

I first discovered his music shortly after the release of 'Reaper', when his name suddenly seemed to explode onto all of my social media timelines. Upon hearing that first song, 'Houdini', I was absolutely hooked, and have remained hooked until this day. As I loved his music so much, naturally, I wanted to listen to all of the songs that he had to offer. This led me down a thorough listen of his entire discography, and the eventual discovery of an unreleased track called 'Call Back' on YouTube. The song was in bloody awful quality, seemingly being a phone recording from when it was played on an Instagram live-stream once.

Regardless of the horrible quality, the song quickly became one of my all time favourites in his whole catalogue, and I wasn’t the only one. 'Call Back' seemed to whip a bit of a cult following in the fanbase of nothing,nowhere., with very little information being known about it, people became interested quickly. The fans dug deep for anything that they could find on the track, even going as far as asking Erik Ron, the producer for 'Reaper'. He confirmed that the song did indeed come from that album's sessions, and was given the temporary name “trashboi” in the studio. Fans even reached out to nothing,nowhere. himself, who told everyone that the song was actually never called 'Call Back', and that he doesn’t know who even gave it that name to begin with. He said that he didn’t think the track would get an official release anytime soon. Eventually, the song just seemed to be forgotten, with fans accepting that it probably would never see the light of day.

Then, seemingly out of nowhere on this Friday, an official, a high-quality version of 'Call Back' surprisingly surfaced on Spotify and iTunes, and the song finally had it's official release. The likely fan created title of 'Call Back' stuck as well, likely fan service by nothing,nowhere., who clearly saw how dedicated so many people were to this almost-forgotten song. In its high quality form, it is easy to see that this piece is one of the best songs that nothing,nowhere. has ever written. It’s a very different track for the guy, being more laid back on the percussion side of things, and also pushing nearly six-minutes in length. It’s a song built almost entirely off of the quiet opening riffs and melodies, gradually building up into its emotionally-driven choruses and bridges. Seriously, try not to sing along to those choruses when they kick in - it’s goddamn difficult!

While 'Call Back' may not be an entirely new song, it is certainly a welcome addition to the diverse discography of nothing,nowhere. This is a song that his fanbase has waited a very long time for and has also grown very attached to. While it’s easy to see the reasoning for it not being added to the very album that it was originally recorded for, the fact still remains that with the official release, 'Call Back' will likely shoot to the top of his most popular cuts. As for a fan of this myself, this has been a long time coming; a long wait now coming to an end.
