Jesus, who the hell went and shat in Dregg's cereal? 'Return Of The Dregg' is one pissed-off tune!

Jesus Christ, who the hell shat in Dregg's cereal?

A catchy dosage of riffs, aggro hardcore energy, self-expression, and pissed-off attitude is where Dregg picked up last week with new single, 'Return Of The Dregg'. Named so as it's not only the band's first piece of new material since last year's decent self-titled EP but also acting as a sort of mentality guide-line for the band to live by: "I'll be a Dregg 'til I'm dead". To some people, that'll just sound really corny, but for the band themselves, it's like their way of life; their ethos, if you will. Love it, you know where the front of the stage is. Hate it, you know where the door is.

Lyrically, and ever the band to speak their mind, 'Return Of The Dregg' touches on a range of topics that the Melbourne heavy hardcore band are deeply passionate about. This ranges from sexuality (frontman Christopher Mackertich stealing a kiss with another guy in the track's video helps the band weed out any homophobes amongst their listenership); to what the group see as a dire lack of creativity within the local Australian heavy music scene ("I'm so sick of your lyrics/They all sound the same"); to even how they see PC culture as going too far these days ("You're nothing but a virtue signalling disease"). Whilst no specific names of people, ideas or bands are ever dropped in the piece, you can sure as hell bet Dregg had certain individuals and things in mind when penning this new track's words and piecing it all together.

I do find it a little funny and ironic that Dregg refers to themselves as "new wave hardcore" yet this song's breakdown section is one of the most generic, tough-guy sounding hardcore passages they've ever written; all lead by guitarist Matt "I'm Fucking Hostile" Henley (also of Ocean Grove). Although just like how the music video sarcastically reads "another generic white-room shot" during that very part, I think that's the joke; to mock the bands who write such music and who take it all too seriously.

Either way, fuck with new Dregg below:
