I'm aware that labelling a Ceres song as heartfelt is like your typical YouTuber asking everyone to like and subscribe at the end of a video: it's just a massive given. Yet for Melbourne's Ceres, they've never lost touch with their authentic songwriting and genuine lyricism. The Aussie quartet has built-up a decent career and an incredible back-catalogue of songs by always staying honest and open with their fans; from their old EP's and singles to 2014's solid 'I Don't Want To Be Anywhere But Here' LP, and of course to 2016's powerful 'Drag It Down On You' full-length. However, after that last LP and their 'Stretch Ur Skin' 7" from 2017, the band didn't think they'd continue on for much longer.

Thankfully, the towel was not thrown in and nothing ever faded into obscurity and distant memory. As singer and guitarist Tom Lanyon admits, his own writer’s block had at one point cast serious doubt over the future of Ceres: "Your life can be muffled and then something pops and everything gets wider and brighter." It was actually the creation and writing of their excellent new single, 'Viv In The Front Seat', that changed all of this; "unblocking" his ears, so to speak.

It's a rocking, feel-good love-song spurned on by the loss of family but also thoughtfulness, companionship and kindness. It's as charming, as warm, as homey, and as well-written as anything else you'll find in the esteemed Ceres discography. And just like so many of their other songs, it's a track laced with real-life experiences, difficulties, and deep personal changes. Tom even recently explained the close-to-home story that drove 'Viv In The Front Seat' into existence; a matter of very difficult times generating the best inspirations, writing:

“My girlfriend lost her parents and her dad was named Viv. He was an artist, and she had all these little sketches of his which I got framed. There were eight pictures, little A4 frames, and when I picked them up from the shop I stacked them all in the front seat of my car and put the seat belt over them, and in my head straight away the lyric popped into my head: I’ve got Viv in the front seat.”
