It's just one of those days with the new single from Lotus Eater, 'Break It'.

It's just one of those days with new Lotus Eater.

I did a double take when I saw that Lotus Eater - a down-tuned, groovy and breakdown-happy hardcore band from Scotland - was appearing on the Hopeless Records channels. Earlier this week, a bunch of their music videos hit the Hopeless YouTube page like a crowd killer's swinging limbs against an unsuspecting punter, bringing both old and new material to fresh eyes and ears. While the American label has bands like Sylar and Cruel Hand under their roster, Lotus Eater are still the odd ones out on what is so-often a rock/alternative/pop-punk line-up. Which is great for this young band's exposure, to say the very least.

Now, Lotus Eater and their label refer to the band's sound as "gloom-metal" - with the band's lyrical tagline being "gloom is my home". Call it whatever you want, but really, it's still just very much in-line with what you'd expect from most low-tuned, nu-metal-tinged beatdown/hardcore bands these days. Nonetheless, their new single, 'Break It', goes damned hard!

With neck-snapping riffs, huge breakdowns, scratchy guitars, bone-crushing grooves, and a solid, two-stepping tempo change half-way through, 'Break It' works exceedingly well because it doesn't go on for any longer than it needs to. By the time the quintet dive into the song's pounding final third - with chugging guitars, incendiary vocals, and reverberant drums crackin' away - it concludes exactly when it needs to. (The very same can be said of the highly confrontational 'Branded' - a track that was released back in February pre-signing - what with its chain-sawing riffs, blast-beat-heavy sections and trappy sounds). Pretty much, if these guys have an EP or even a full-length album of songs like this coming later in 2018, then I won't at all be saying no to it!
