Sydney guitar extraordinaire, Plini, dropping new EP later this month.

Right after Plini released his last album, 2016's wonderful 'Handmade Cities', the Australian prog-guitarist set his sights on creating a "very big, small EP". His plan was to craft a new body of work that wouldn't be too long in length but still had plenty of musical detail and sonic depth to its sound. On his fourth EP, 'Sunhead' (out July 27th), the Sydney musician achieves this and so much more with just four tracks. In short, it's fuckin' sick! 'Sunhead' really is indeed another win for Plini.

'Sunhead' was written, recorded and produced by Plini himself, and was, for the most part, a sole bedroom studio project too. Yet you couldn't tell that from the world-class musicianship of the EP's bright-as-day opener, 'Kind'. But despite the small-scale setting of the EP's creative space, it features some killer collaborations. There's The 1975’s pianist/saxophonist John Waugh performing crisp sax parts on the EP's glittering third-track, the funky and jazzy 'Flâneur'. The very same stand-out song also touts keys and piano performances from Québec Nu-Jazz/Future Funk producer/artist Nicolas Dupuis, AKA Anomalie. This new EP's first single, 'Salt + Charcoal', also includes a guest guitar solo by Skyharbor's very own Devesh Dayal. Then to finish off the EP, you have a slick, flashy solo from Tim Miller on the titular track, 'Sunhead'.

Plini's name gets thrown around a lot these days for many reasons, one being the accomplishments he continually strikes. He's had his material taught to students at Berklee College of Music; he and his band were the first instrumental guitar group to ever play Download Festival; and his name crops up in most guitar magazines "Top X Best Guitarists" lists very often. Yet what makes Plini actually stand out is his strong compositional ability to mix the tech and prog side of things with that of the purely musical and joyful; making something that's equally impressive and cheerful to experience over and over again.

That's true of much of his past material and that's also indeed what you get with this entire EP, new single 'Salt + Charcoal' especially! That song, in particular, just sounds like injecting straight-up happiness into your veins; like watching a jaw-dropping sunrise with your friends or experiencing something new and fresh for the first time. It's inspirational, contrastive in tone and colors (hence the name) and perhaps most importantly, it's just damned good stuff from one of Australia's best guitarists. So go eat up 'Salt + Charcoal' and it's Tesseract North American touring visuals below:
