It’s been a very interesting two years in the WWE for Australian superstar, Buddy Murphy.

The former NXT Tag-Team Champion and first ever Australian to hold a championship in the WWE found it difficult to break through the fold in singles competition after going solo late 2015. “The Best Kept Secret” has fought long and hard to break back into the limelight and over the past six months, the WWE Universe has once again noticed the great talent the veteran Australian possesses.

Since losing 20 pounds (or nearly 10 kilograms for those who use the metric i.e. correct system, like proper humans,) to compete for the Cruiserweight Championship on the 205 Live program, for competitors who weigh less than 205 pounds (93kgs), Murphy has gone above and beyond to prove himself to the world. Just this week earning the number one contendership, scoring himself a future title shot against a yet to be crowned champion.

But what music did the Melbourne-native listen to in the gym as he was pumping iron and smashing cardio to cut the weight to compete in the Cruiserweight division?

“I’m a big fan of everything, I don’t have a particular band or genre I like to listen to, I did listen to lots of Metallica, Killswitch Engage and Fozzy when I trained, but I will listen to whatever I’m feeling at the time", says Murphy. “I’m a big fan of Slipknot and Stone Sour. They just get me. They get me hyped up [before a workout or match]. A Day To Remember also get me really hyped. I don’t always listen to whole albums, but there’s a couple of songs of bands that just get me and I’m really pumped up whenever they come on”.

But heavy music isn’t always pumping in Buddy’s headphone at the gym. “It’s not always hardcore music and lift heavy weights for me”, he tells us. Murphy has been seen on Twitter professing his love for soul and R'n'B legend Seal. “I’m a big 80s guy, I just put on my Pandora and listens to 80s love songs” he laughs. “I’m also a big fan of the movie “Popstar” so I also have that soundtrack pumping when I’m at the gym”.

Murphy’s appreciation for the heavier side of music may have come around thanks to Australian independent wrestling stand-out, Adam Brooks, when the two used to team up at wrestling promotions interstate “We would take his car on those 10-12 hour trips and the only CD in his car was 'Chocolate Starfish And The Hotdog Flavoured Water' by Limp Bizkit”, Murphy fondly recalls “So that’s all we listened to and they are pretty much the only songs in the world that I know all the lyrics too. So at least one good thing came out of it all”.

Buddy’s love for Fred Durst and co. doesn’t stop there, however, as when pondering who would be the dream band to play him out to the ring at WrestleMania, or the potential massive stadium show in Melbourne in October, Murphy came to the conclusion that Limp Bizkit would be the ideal soundtrack to such an epic entrance. “I’d have to say Limp Bizkit and they would have to play “My Way”, relive the old WrestleMania theme song”. “Imagine that: Limp Bizkit playing “My Way” in Melbourne and if I was the Cruiserweight champion, not much would beat that. That song alone would win the crowd over. I might have to message the powers that be to see if we can make that happen!”

Whether it be with or without Limp Bizkit by his side, I’m sure all of Australia’s wrestling fans will be behind Murphy the next time he ventures back to the homeland.

You can watch Buddy Murphy represent Australian on 205 Live on the WWE Network every Wednesday afternoon. WrestleMania will stream live on the WWE Network on Monday, April 9th.
