In news that was actually let out of the bag by someone very close to the band a couple months back over social media, Melbourne metalcore youngsters Thornhill have now officially signed up with UNFD, joining recent local signees in Easy Life and Introvert.

On the signing, Thornhill themselves said that: “We were wearing UNFD shirts in year 10 at our Inter-School Battle of the Bands. To get a signing offer three years later was absolutely surreal. We are equal parts nervous and excited to show everyone this release through a label that we’ve looked up to for years.”

With this label news today, the band also bring with them the announcement of their second EP, 'Butterfly', as well as the release's first single - 'Reptile'. And just one listen to this new song and it's clear that the up and coming band have progressed greatly in their short time together as a unit - much like the life-cycle of an actual butterfly, they've undergone their own metamorphosis in some ways. As one of the current progressive(ish)/metalcore Australian bands doing the rounds of late, there are the obvious Northlane and Karnivool influences on clear display here in the band's latest single. But then there's also some added Radiohead and even Jeff Buckley flavours at time, so it's very safe to say that they've sure shit come a long way since that '13' EP too.

'Butterfly' is poised to be an immense, heavy, intricate and slick metal soundtrack, one that'll take an introspective look at the experiences of a 20-year-old. As for 'Reptile', no lyric here quite sums up the questioning, millennial existential dread that other younger people such as myself often feel then the song's final line: "And I think to myself what a life/Why be here if I’m going to die". Yeah, me too, Thorny, me too.

'Butterfly' drops February 16th via UNFD (and won't feature the band's previous two singles - 'Temperer' and 'Limbo'.
