Regular readers will know that I've championed Melbourne's finest cinematic art rock group, Fierce Mild, a hell of a lot in the past. More recently, however, the band released their latest, layered and textured sonic affair - the sublime 'Dasein'. Following on from their wondrously bleak and haunting composition 'Solaris', this newer cut shows that even with a much shorter song length than what they're used to, this local post-rock five-piece can still create engrossing, ambient soundscapes.

This new song is actually but the first of a trilogy to be found on the band's forthcoming full-length album (which I'm now eagerly awaiting with bated breath to arrive in my inbox), with all three pieces each providing a different moment of contemplation and pause. After all, Fierce Mild has a real knack for merging the audible with the metaphorical and the philosophical, and 'Dasein' is no exception.

For you see, "Dasein" was the fundamental concept and bedrock for Martin Heidegger’s 1972 existential philosophical work, Being and Time, and is loosely translated into English as “existence”. In Heidegger's book, the German author sought to analyse the concept of Being and he uses Dasein to refer to the experience of being that is particular to that of human beings; beings that have to confront being alone, interpersonal relationships, and our own mortality. Heady philosophy aside, adding to this sublime new track's theme of personal selfhood is its Soundcloud description, which states that "A brain is sexless. It is classless, cultureless and raceless. A brain becomes its shell as it is shaped like clay by the world which looks at it. It learns to look at itself with that world in mind. We are at once trapped and comforted by our sculpted forms."

This is deeply contemplative and intricate music that makes you think, and I love it.
