On the video, McCaughan said:

"Ben Pier shot all this footage in tandem with shooting the Sundowner album cover. It makes the video for ‘Cemetery West' seem almost like a companion piece to Neon Fiction. It visually captures some feeling essential to the song and the record. If you've seen the album art it all starts to make more sense. The refrain 'I won't let the darkness catch me this time' may suggest it's about running. But, at the heart, it's a song about letting go. A song I wrote in anticipation of a big change in my life.

Ben caught a world in the frames that felt honest and authentic. Tuned in with the way I felt about the lyrics and the song. We explored the city at night. We drove around jamming Kendrick Lamar. We shot in front of a blaring neon sign in a motel parking lot. An image that became an icon of the record. We drank gas-station coffee. We went to this insane tiki bar. We took my bike out in search of basketball hoops, bleeding lights, and empty downtown streets. Most importantly, Ben shot his style. And I got a chance to show off my jump shot."
