Crowded House Crowned With Icon Award At Rolling Stone Australia Awards

A year after the Rolling Stone Australia Awards issued the inaugural Icon Award to Tina Arena, Crowded House won the second-ever award at last night’s ceremony.

Crowded House singer Neil Finn and Angus And Julia Stone also performed on the night. In addition to the Better Be Home Soon group taking home the Icon Award, four other awards were handed out, including Best Single, Best Record, Best New Artist, and the Rolling Stone Global Award.

Nine Network presenter Richard Wilkins presented Neil Finn with the Icon Award, saying it was a “great honour” to give the award to Crowded House.

“It's a great honour and pleasure to be here tonight to present this award to a band that was formed in the mid-80s out of the ashes of a wonderful group called Split Enz,” Wilkins said to present the award. “They moved to the Hollywood Hills and made one of the great records of all time. It is my great pleasure and honour to announce that the Rolling Stone Icon Award goes to Crowded House.”

Upon accepting the award, Finn said, “Thank you, Rolling Stone, for making us into an icon. I'm not sure what that truly means, but I think it means you need to go to Mecca and buy some makeup, so I've done that. I'd like to thank all the band members of Crowded House, so I'm representing them; they send their love. For everybody, thank you so much for honouring us in this fashion.”

Elsewhere, Peach PRC beat tough competition from the likes of Dom Dolla and MK, Budjerah, Amy Shark, Lime Cordiale and more in the Best Single category, winning with Perfect For You and thanking Paris Hilton for allowing her to sample the 2006 single Stars Are Blind in her speech.

Dom Dolla took home Best New Artist over Royel Otis, Teen Jesus And The Jean Teasers and more, The Teskey Brothers took home Best Record for The Winding Way, and Tones And I won the Rolling Stone Global Award.

Accepting her award, Tones And I said, “Thank you so much. I’d like to thank my team for all the support. Wow, this is an incredible award to win, up against such an icon in Kylie Minogue, who helped pave the way for women in pop music on a global scale.”

The Brag Media’s Poppy Reid, the Editor-in-Chief at Rolling Stone Australia/New Zealand, said of this year’s winners: “Congratulations to our incredible nominees and winners. Their music was listened to and judged by some of the world’s most influential music critics listened to and judged their music.
