Olivia Rodrigo Tops ARIA Singles Chart With Comeback Bop 'Vampire'

Vampire – the lead single from the second Olivia Rodrigo album, GUTS – has debuted at #1 this week. 

Vampire (Geffen) becomes the 1125th #1 single in Australia (from 1940 to 2023), the 560th for ARIA ( 1983 to 2023), and the 139th to debut at the top of the chart, It’s now the sixth #1 for 2023, the eighth for Geffen (since their first in 1980 for John Lennon’s (Just Like) Starting Over) and now the third for Rodrigo – her debut solo release, Drivers License, spent six weeks in the top spot from January 18, 2021.

During the 2020s, only three acts have achieved three separate #1 singles – Taylor Swift with four and Mariah Carey with three different appearances for All I Want For Christmas Is You – so technically Rodrigo has had more different #1 singles this decade with her three chart-topping stints. Rodrigo also bumps her tally of weeks spent at #1 up to 12, as she also logged five weeks at the top with Good 4 U (from May 31, 2021).

It gives her the fourth highest tally of weeks at #1 for this decade, behind Miley Cyrus (13 weeks), The Kid LAROI (18 weeks) and Taylor Swift (19 weeks). This new #1 for Rodrigo also increases her position in the overall #1 listings (1940 to 2023), moving up from equal 66th to now equal 61st alongside The Carpenters (also 12 weeks from three #1 singles). 

Rodrigo’s second album, GUTS, is due out on September 8. Vampire is the lead single, and marks the first time that the word ‘vampire’ has appeared in a #1 song title. The new #1 song also becomes the 721st by an American act (solo male or female, duo or group) to hit the top in Australia; it also topped charts in New Zealand and Ireland, and made it to #2 in England, #7 in the Netherlands and #10 in Germany, Iceland and Norway (so far). 

After four weeks of running in the top spot, the Dave and Central Cee collaboration Sprinter has dipped one spot to #2, also picking up a Gold (●) certification while it holds the #1 spot in England for a fifth week. Remaining at its #3 peak for a second week is Taylor Swift’s Cruel Summer, while she also climbs with two further Top Ten entries, Anti-Hero (up seven spots to #6, marking its 30th week in the Top Ten – the tenth longest of all time in Australia) and Karma (rising eight spots to #7). 

She also increases her Top 50 single tally to 13 this week, and makes ARIA Albums chart history by holding the entire Top Five: Midnights tops the list at #1, followed by Lover at #2, 1989 at #3, Reputation at #4 and Folklore at #5. 

Morgan Wallen’s Last Night reached its 13th week at #1 in the US, but locally drops two places to #4. Meanwhile the US’#2 entry this week – Luke Combs and his cover of Fast Car – is here down one spot to #5. The second Top Ten certification this week sees Flowers by Miley Cyrus bloom into 5x▲Platinum in sales, but drops to its lowest position in the Top Ten, down three spots to #8. It’s followed by Daylight by David Kushner, also down three spots to #9, with the #10 position occupied by FIFTY FIFTY’s Cupid, down one place from last week. 

TOP 20

Returning to the Top 100 at #11 is Taylor Swift’s Style, originally a three-week-running #8 single from February 16, 2015 (it first entered the charts on November 3, 2014), charting regularly for 40 weeks until October 5, 2015. This is followed by the second and final Top 20 entry for Taylor Swift, as Blank Space (also from 1989) jumps up eight places to land at #12. Swift just dropped her album Speak Now (Taylor's Version) on Friday, so there could potentially be another 22 tracks of hers in the chart next week, alongside the 21 she currently has.

NEW PEAK: The only new peak in this week’s Top 20 is Popular by The Weeknd with Playboi Carti and Madonna, which rises two places to land at #19. The Weeknd’s album, The Idol Vol.1, makes its entry at #73 this week, while his second Top 20 single sees Die For You (with Ariana Grande) drop four spots down to #15. The only Top Ten dropout this week is Kill Bill by SZA (with Doja Cat), which is now at its lowest ever chart position of #13. Calm Down for Rema and Selena Gomez also dropped two spots to #14, while it’s still #1 in Canada. 

Further three-place drops occur for Boy's A Liar by PinkPantheress (from #13 to #16), As It Was by Harry Styles (#14 to #17), Something In The Orange by Zach Bryan (#15 to #18) and I Ain't Worried by OneRepublic (#17 to #20). 

TOP 30

NEW PEAKS: After debuting at #34 last week, the Barbie soundtrack entry for Nicki Minaj, Ice Spice and Aqua – Barbie World – jumps up ten places to #24, while the song also landed at #7 in the US, and #22 in Canada. It climbed slightly in Ireland (from #28 to #26) and New Zealand (#29 to #28), too. The other new peak comes for Taylor Swift's Enchanted, which climbs 16 places to land at #27. Either side of that track, she has two songs rising nine places each – Lover (from #35 to #26) and Cardigan (#38 to #29). 

Post Malone announced a November tour this week, and his latest entry to the charts, Chemical, rose back up 14 places to perch at #22. Meanwhile, Lewis Capaldi had to postpone his tour here, but he still has three Top 100 entries this week: Someone You Loved sits at #21 (down three places from #18 last week), while Wish You The Best sits at #52 (down from #49) and Before You Go sits at #83 (down from #76). 

There are two new certified tracks in the Top 30 this week: All My Life by Lil' Durk (featuring J. Cole) at #23 (down from #16, but now Gold (●) in sales) and Miracle by Calvin Harris and Ellie Goulding (down from #22 to #30, buy now▲Platinum). Also declining are Until I Found You by Stephen Sanchez (from #19 to #25) and the highest placed Aussie act, Vance Joy, with Riptide down from #24 to #28.

TOP 40

NEW PEAKS: Taylor Swift scores the only new peak in this chart region, as Don't Blame Me jumps up seven places to #34. Her other Top 40 entries are both climbing, with Shake it Off at #33 (from #40) and Lavender Haze at #40 (from #45). Post Malone's other Top 50 entry sees Sunflower wilting four places to #32, while the other small decline here is for Dua Lipa’s Dance The Night, dropping five spots to #38. 

Eight-place drops occur for Creepin' by 21 Savage, Metro Boomin, and The Weeknd (#23 to #31), Padam Padam by Kylie Minogue (#27 to #35) and Escapism by 070 Shake and RAYE. (#29 to #37). An 11-place slump sees Heat Waves by Glass Animals fall down to #36. 

TOP 50

Taylor Swift again has the only climbing tracks here, as All Too Well (Taylor's Version) jumps up 13 places to #42, and Love Story (Taylor's Version) rises 20 places to land at #49. Her eight further Top 100 entries are The Man (#83 to #62), You Belong With Me (Taylor’s Version) (#97 to #66), You Need To Calm Down (a re-entry at #75), August (holding steady at #78), Snow on the Beach with Lana Del Rey (#86 to #80), Bejewelled (still at #84 return), Willow (still at #90) and Midnight Rain (still at #95). 

Ed Sheeran has his two Top 50 entries in this chart section, with Eyes Closed down nine spots to #41, and Shivers down six to #48. Luke Combs racks up one full year (or 52 weeks) in the Top 100 (and 41 weeks in the Top 50) with The Kind Of Love We Make, which is down six places this week to #45. He is again back-to-back with Morgan Wallen, although Morgan is below Luke this time, as You Proof falls nine places to land at #46. 

Double-digit declines occur for People by Libianca (#26 to #43), Area Codes by Kaliii (30 to #44) and the final soundtrack entry from Metro Boomin', Am I Dreaming (#31 to #47). 

NEW ENTRY: #39 – FukUMean by Gunna. It's lifted from the American rapper’s three-week-old album A Gift & A Curse (not to be confused with the new Kerser album, A Gift & A Kers), and debuted and peaked at #49 on June 26. This new entry becomes the fourth Top 50 placement for the artist born Sergio Giavanni Kitchens, made up of two lead vocal entries and two guest appearances. He peaked at #19 last January with Pushin' P (featuring Young Thug), and his highest chart placement was on the song Lemonade by Internet Money (which also featured Don Toliver, Nav and Anuel AA).
