Aussie singer-songwriter Raechel Whitchurch gets personal with her new single and its accompanying music video.

Premiering today via The Music, My Father is an exciting taste of what to expect from Whitchurch’s debut album and its clip was shot on her family’s property outside of Parkes, NSW.

“There’s a line in the chorus of My Father that says, ‘Won’t you take me for a drive down an old dirt road,’ and there’s actually a specific type of road I was thinking of when I wrote the song,” Whitchurch told The Music.

“When I was a kid we lived in Broken Hill, in far West NSW, and the dirt roads out there are a deep red colour and the dust coats everything it touches.

“My dad had a mail contract, delivering mail to all of the station owners in the region on roads just like this. It was a 540km round trip and he did it every Wednesday and Saturday. There were about 50 gates to open throughout the day, so he would always convince one of us kids to get up before sunrise, and come on the mail run with him to help.

“It never sounded like much fun, but once we were on the road, looking out the window at the huge western sky with millions of stars above us, it felt so magical. The sun would start to come up and we’d turn off the bitumen onto a dirt road, and there would be a cassette playing our favourite country album.

“Those days out in the bush with my dad are some of my favourite childhood memories. Just my dad and I, talking about everything under the sun and trying to make sense of this world. One dirt road at a time.”

Raechel Whitchurch’s debut album is expected to drop in early 2021.
