BLOODMOON (AKA Dougy Mandagi of The Temper Trap) explains the meaning and creative process behind each track on his debut E.P 'Giving Up Air' ahead of his BIGSOUND showcase next week.

More BLOODMOON More BLOODMOON

With their mega hit 'Sweet Disposition' having a second life thanks to Tik Tok, The Temper Trap frontman Dougy Mandagi has stepped outside of the band's shadow to release his debut EP 'Giving Up Air'. Performing his first ever solo shows at next week's BIGSOUND, the event will be a full-circle moment with The Temper Trap showcasing in 2008 ahead of their global record deal signing. Mandagi's debut shows the same emotional hallmarks of the band, but takes the sound to a whole new level.

BLOODMOOON takes us through the EP, track by track.

Soon Baby, Soon

“This song was a lockdown baby. Born in the middle of a pandemic and in a time of confusion and real uncertainty, this was a song I needed to write to myself.”

As Time Goes By

“I wrote this in Berlin as a sort of goodbye song to the city that had given me so much creatively and made me struggle and grow as an artist.”

Nothing’s Lost

“One the best parts of going solo has been to break free of old forms and allow myself to colour outside the lines. This song was an exercise in doing exactly that.”

Deeper

“It’s been such a pleasure to collaborate with artists I admire and respect on this track. Seeing other people’s vision shape something you started can be a wondrous thing.”

Disarm

“Sometimes I find when writing, you throw your line in and patiently wait for a bite. This song, however, felt like a fish that just shot out of the water and landed in the boat. I'm always working on melodies and took this to Jono Ma who I've collaborated with on a number of tracks, and I believe we've created something really fresh and special. Disarm came together so easily both musically and lyrically for me. It is deeply personal and came from the bottom swimming upwards until it finally broke through the surface.”

All In Place (feat. Bearcubs)

“Birthed in a tiny Berlin bedroom studio and co-written with my friend/frequent collaborator Jack Ritchie aka Bearcubs, I’m so excited to finally release this track. Inspired by my travels and Balinese heritage, this song encapsulates my journey in search of a creative identity. A journey with no end in sight, yet one I am compelled to stay on.”

You can catch BLOODMOON's debut shows at BIGSOUND next week.
