Melbourne’s This Space Is Ours are back with Gone In May, their most furious track to date, with the five-piece sharing Six Powerful Angry Songs By Women to celebrate the single.

Combining elements of metalcore such as breakdowns, chugging riffs and a soaring chorus to their signature pop-punk/punk-rock sound, This Space Is Ours sound completely reinvigorated on Gone In May.

The track was recorded at various venues, including Pony Music, Studio Delos, and United POP. Gone In May was mixed by Beau McKee, a renowned producer whose portfolio includes collaborations with Earth Caller, Christopher Dicker, and Between You & Me.

“This is our heaviest release to date, both in terms of genre and the subject matter,” vocalist Gemma Dunsmore explained. “The lyrics are incredibly personal and inspired by the sudden passing of my dad when I was ten years old and the subsequent anger and confusion I felt for many years in the aftermath.

Gone In May covers all of the emotions that come with losing a loved one; longing, sadness, anger, confusion, and conflicting thoughts on what happens to us after death. Gone In May was very much written for myself. I’ve always processed my emotions through music.”

Dunsmore added, “Growing up and dealing with the passing of my dad, I was always on the hunt for a song that captured the exact way I felt, but they always seemed to miss the mark. They never seemed quite angry enough. So, with the help of the rest of the band, I wrote one myself.”

To accompany This Space Is Ours’ brilliant new single, Dunsmore has shared Six Powerful Angry Songs By Women.

"Originally I was going to write up a list of powerful displays of anger in songs in general, but as I was going through the songs on my phone and choosing which to include, I realised that the majority of the songs I was choosing were written by women.

"Whether this is because I myself am a woman and can relate to what is being said in these songs or simply because women have a whole lot to be angry about and, in turn, are better at anger, I don’t know.

"Either way, here are some angry songs that I find important and powerful."

You Oughta Know - Alanis Morissette

It would probably be a crime if I wrote a list of angry songs by women and didn’t include this one. THE song that has been screamed by scorned women all over the planet since 1995.

Ignorance - Paramore

This song was a huge part of my teenage years, with lyrics that detail the anger that comes with feeling like you’re losing friends. Interestingly with this song, Hayley Williams wrote the lyrics to get out some tough feelings directed towards the other band members when the band was at a breaking point.

Maggots – Ashnikko

With my personal music taste, this will be the only song on here that isn’t rock or rock-related. Inspired by online abuse Ashnikko herself has faced from the incel community, it’s a song most modern women with a social media account can relate to.

Molotov [Ok] - Stand Atlantic

Stand Atlantic are an Aussie band that’s doing great things; they’re definitely one of my favourite bands at the moment. Inspired by the intolerance frontwoman Bonnie Fraser witnessed attending a religious school, this song rails against the homophobia being taught to students.

Zombie - The Cranberries

I (and I’m sure many, many others) consider this to be one of the most powerful songs of all time. One part because of the late Dolores O’Riordan's ethereal voice, and one part because of the subject matter. A visceral response after children were killed in an IRA bombing.

Dead Men Don’t R*** - Delilah Bon

The title, as well as the lyrics of this song, speak for themselves and are confronting, but my god, are they important. Written as a direct response to Roe vs Wade being overturned in the USA, this song addresses a system that is failing to protect victims of abuse.
