To celebrate the return of the ultimate dance party, SYNTHONY - an event that blends electronic dance music, live orchestra, DJs, vocalists, and immersive visuals - Thandi Phoenix has shared her top five dance anthems that will never fail to put you in a party mood.

More Thandi Phoenix More Thandi Phoenix

Lola’s Theme by Shapeshifters

This song brings me nothing but joy. It just hooks you in instantly and has this undeniable uplifting energy – you can’t help but want to sing along at the top of your lungs. The main melodic riff that kicks off the song is actually a sample from What About My Love, an 80s funk/soul classic by Jonny Taylor. I really love how Shapeshifters have utilised it throughout with a groovy bass line, four-on-the-floor drums and that killer vocal hook sung by soul singer Cookie. Big yes for me.

Music Sounds Better With You by Stardust

This song feels like summertime. It's such a timeless classic with a retro/futuristic feel and showcases how powerful simplicity can be. There are no wild build-ups or massive drops – just this consistent funky groove that leaves you wanting more. The film clip is also imprinted in my mind and takes me back to being a kid and watching video hits on the weekend. Thomas Bangalter, from Daft Punk, actually formed Stardust and this was the only song that they ever released. No wonder it's so damn good!

Show Me Love by Robin S

Now how could I make this list without including Show Me Love!? This is the definition of a dance ANTHEM! It was such a massive hit in the 90s and continues to be remixed/sampled and interpolated over time. It was most recently used by Beyonce in Break My Soul. The sign of a great song – it's stood the test of time and continues to serve as inspiration for other artists across different genres.

When A Fire Starts To Burn by Disclosure

This song is an absolute heater! It was my introduction to Disclosure and I have been a massive fan ever since. With a grimy dirty bass, crisp house beat and their signature bouncy synths – it’s a guaranteed floor filler. You can hear the influence of Chicago house on the track with their use of retro sounds. I love the attitude of the vocal sample they used from Eric Thomas, an American motivational speaker and preacher. Big vibe on this one.

Good Luck by Basement Jaxx

This one packs a punch! Such a badass breakup song, full of grit and attitude. Lisa Kekaula’s vocals are so tasty. She has an incredible tone and such conviction with every word she sings - I’d hate to be her ex haha. I adore the orchestral arrangement, what an epic intro to the song. It just draws you in, with a sense of majesty and then smacks you in the face with that stank synth bass and punchy vocals in the verse. Great use of contrast and I really enjoy the balance they’ve achieved intertwining the swelling strings and the more intense production and vocal delivery. Chefs kiss.
