Sounding Out The Unknown

"We sought the unknown and experimented with different ways to get there."

Dense and rich with detail, Sonori have released their self-titled, debut EP, which is promised by the band's very own drum-machine connoisseur Jasper Russell will "make you feel grounded and at home amidst chaos". And really, what more could you want?

Self-described as "inspired and elated", the EP was recorded in band member Andre Matkovic's backyard studio. "It was a space where we had complete convenience as well as social and creative freedom," Russell explains. "We often have sporadic and spontaneous availability," he continues, making the home studio set-up the perfect environment for the culmination of the Sonori EP.

"It began as an exploration of uncharted lands," reveals Russell, and this is demonstrated through the EP's meandering themes and musical motifs that were developed over the underlying consistencies of bass and drums, and further decorated by lead singer Lulu Levins-Skehill's vocal artistry. "We sought the unknown and experimented with different ways to get there," Russell  adds.

The band's favourite track proved hard to pick, with each song exposing its own unique personality. "The consensus would most likely be Vanity," decides Russell when pressed. "We all put a lot into it and that's why it was the single".

Through all the challenges and pressures of releasing a debut EP, Sonori stress the importance of support from both friends and fans in the creation and continuation of their art. "Encouragement from friends and people at gigs I feel is most inspiring for us," says Russell. "It's the best motivation there is... It makes us want to write and record more."

It is not hard to appreciate just how much of themselves Sonori have put into the pieces of this inaugural work. "We've lived with them, shared houses with them... the tracks chosen for the EP have almost become like old friends," Russell discloses, and from what we've heard of the EP, this is not a friendship you want to miss.
