'Rock Princess' Distortion Pedals To Hit Shelves In Time For Xmas

"It's become clear to me that the real barriers [women] face ... come down to a total lack of pink equipment."

Australian music stores are preparing to open themselves up to a whole new audience with the introduction of "more feminine" distortion, loop and effects pedals, ostensibly to encourage a greater number of women to become rock musicians.

According to Rock Princess Pedals Ltd chief executive Bruce David, the new line of accessories is deliberately designed with the fairer sex in mind, using historically stereotypical colour standards and generous sequins to bring long-overdue gender division to goods such as pedals but leads, picks, and other miscellaneous live-performance gear.

"I've noticed a distinct absence of women in a lot of the heavier musical fields over the past ten years or so," David told SPA Confidential, "and it's become clear to me that the real barriers they face to entering typically rough-and-ready genres usually majority-occupied by men come down to a total lack of pink equipment."

David quit his full-time job as a fedora salesman to develop and create a line of gear that he felt would help create a greater sense of gender balance among performers by specifically distinguishing between them. He feels it will bring the industry more into line with the standard practices of modern capitalist enterprise.

"It seems like no other industry is willing to leave their products without some sense of gender specificity," David explained. "Even potato chips come in 'man-size' servings these days.

"So, with our pedals and gear, we're just trying to say, 'Hey, if you're a woman and you want to rock, it's definitely OK; we're finally able to accommodate you in a way that makes you look pretty.'

"And, to parents, we're saying, 'Hey, if you have a daughter and she wants to rock, she can now acceptably do so in a 'ladylike' fashion', just like the 1950s intended."
