More Majora More Majora

Newcastle instrumental/post-/prog-rock outfit Majora are making their way back to the fore with their sophomore EP, Aphotic, set for release next month.

To help light the way, the band have unveiled the visually captivating video for its frenetic title track, directed by Tim Grove and proudly premiering on theMusic.com.au today.

Without a lyrical crutch to rest on, the song stands tall on its musical merits alone, pulling the listener through a range of feelings at various degrees of ferocity, from thunderous, churning riffs to restrained quietude to untethered, shrill cacophony.

Throughout, the clip's use of slick computer effects and stunning natural scenery conspire to provide a consistently intriguing visual accompaniment to Aphotic's multiple — yet cohesive — moods, a recurrent theme not just within the title track itself but the wider EP.

"Aphotic is our first conceptual and thematic release, with each song relating back to the core concept and written as a continual listening experience from start to finish," the band said in a statement. "This EP is written with a wider variety of influences ranging from ambient music, hip hop and electronica, while pushing ourselves further on a technical level.

"We feel this is our best effort to date in songwriting, production and musicianship, and we are very excited to finally release the Aphotic EP and tour a more dynamic and diverse live set."

Majora's new EP will be released on Friday 15 September via Bird's Robe Records — their first release for the revered indie label — and they will set off for a tour in support of the record in the near future.

"I am very excited to have Majora on the label," Bird's Robe head Mike Solo effused in a statement. "It can't be said enough that they are part of an exciting new breed of instrumental and progressive music coming out of Australia — and this is a great first project to work on together."

Pre-orders are available from this Friday, 11 August, via Bandcamp.
