Skeleton Punk Band Nocturnal Animals Take Us Through Their 'Paint A Picture' EP Track By Track

We're not too sure who the Adelaide-based skeleton punk band Nocturnal Animals actually are, but they're keeping up the spirit of Halloween, and that's cool. We know that we like them, and if you're a fan of blink-182 or Violent Soho, you'll like them too.

Their debut EP, Paint A Picture, takes no prisoners with its furious guitar riffs, exuberant pop-punk vocals and relatable anthems, and in-your-face drumming. The band have picked up steam as their reputation as a live band precedes them: Nocturnal Animals have opened shows for DZ Deathrays, The Buoys, Nerve and Psychedelic Porn Crumpets.

To celebrate the release of Paint A Picture, we caught up with the band that explores dysfunctional relationships, expectations to conform to societal norms and finding confidence in yourself whilst secretly suffering. 

"Paint A Picture is a fuck you with a smile! The emotions of letting go of all your cares and saying a simple fuck you to all the people that have given you grief with a passive tone," the band reveals. "You will go through a musical journey through letters and pages from a diary that represent the feeling of coming into your own; walking with the confidence of not giving a shit whilst recognising underneath that you're scared."

"Work sucks, we know! Partner is giving you the cold shoulder, parents are complaining, you go to have breakfast, and someone uses the last of the milk. All your cares have run dry!"

King Of Dolphins

"Once you've let go of caring, you're ready to tell everyone where they can go, placing the crown on your head and dubbing yourself 'The King Of Dolphins' the corner guy, just wanting to do your thing and sit in the corner at the party."

A Simple Fuck You

"A middle finger to the ex after breaking up. You don't want anything terrible to happen to them, but you hope they have a shit day!"

Tyler's Song

"A song dedicated to the band's little sister Tyler about watching her in a bad relationship and wanting her to come out of her shell, spread her wings like a peacock and fly to be the best version of themselves they can be. If you feel like you're trapped in a relationship, this song is for you!"

Passive Tone

"The feeling of someone not being able to say it to your face; they speak in a passive tone, making you feel like you aren't worth their time."

Picturesque

"You have gone through telling people where they can go and saying you don't care, but in the morning, when you wake up, the truth is that it's hard to get out of bed; you're scared and don't know what to do. There is only one thought on your mind, and the only way to fight it is to scream, 'I'm scared.'"
