Life's A Beach! Part Four: Calling All Cars' Adam Montgomery

Rolling Stones singalongs, hilarious pranks and new best mates.

Yamba

After a much-needed day off, it's time to get back into the swing of the tour and do six shows in a row. Tonight we hit Yamba. This particular show is at the Yamba Bowling Club and the venue capacity seems to hold roughly three times the amount of people who live in the town and the surrounding suburbs. An interesting start. We decided the only way to get a vibe going in such a cavernous space is to get drunk and get everyone in the front row drunk too. To our surprise it worked a charm and the show was a success. Kingswood kill it as usual, at least we think they did, the excessive red wine consumption was blurring a lot of lines. Maybe we weren't even in Yamba.

Coffs Harbour

Don't miss a beat with our FREE daily newsletter

We wake with heavy heads and bleary eyes and decided the only way to fix this shitty morning is to go directly to the ocean. We hit the beach and it's amazing. The water has the most amazing healing effect and we feel alive again. Haydn plays with a crab, I builds the most delightful sandcastle and James surfs a dolphin all the way to shore. Life really is a beach. After all that frolicking we make it to the Hoey Moey in Coffs Harbour. It's good to see our brothers in Kingswood after not seeing them for roughly 11 hours. Such handsome men, with equally handsome crew. Especially that cute guitar tech Jimmy. Wow just wow. A real ladies man. Show in Coffs is rad and the crowd is loose for a Wednesday.

Forster

Forster must of heard about Yamba and in a blatant display of chest-swelling town pride decided to one up them with the venue size. Tonight's show is basically in an airplane hangar. I'm not sure what the capacity is, but I'm going to go with fucking heaps. We begin to get organized for sound check but it's slow going as Ferg (KW) introduces a cricket bat and ball which entertains everyone for a few hours. Sound checks are overrated anyway.  To our surprise a whole heap of people stream in as doors open and the show turns out to be a winner. Kingswood are fantastic and their set finishes up with 80% of the crowd on stage. Good times. I'd just like to give Forster one tip. If you want people to pronounce your town properly, lose the 'R' it's just straight confusing.

Byron Bay

Here is the thing about playing shows in Byron Bay. They are never ever shit. Even if nobody is at your show, the PA sucks and you've had your hand and forearm eaten by a large shark, the show will still rule. It's just the way it is.

We load in and go directly to the beach. As always, it's amazing.  The show is at the Great Northern which is a killer venue with great people. A shout out to Jody for really looking after us. The show is a cracker tonight with both bands having great sets. Lots of love all round. Tonight we are also joined by Blonde On Blonde who are doing the next three shows. Turns out they are legends and a rad band to boot.

Despite everything our bodies and heads are telling us, we decided to have an after party. Drinks are had, jokes are told, stories are embellished and sleep is forgotten. In the morning both bands arise without a trace of a hangover (once again, the magical powers of Byron Bay are on display) we all head to the beach and proceed to love life for the next 5 hours. Byron Bay you win again.

Brisbane

Tonight's show is the only capital city show of the tour and it didn't disappoint. A packed room with people collectively losing their shit. Haydn decides to take a bottle of wine onstage and proceeds to scull half of it then give the rest to the front row. Never a bad idea. We have a ball tonight, so much so it ranks up their with some of our favourite shows.  Kingswood are in fine form and we join them during the encore for a seven man, one girl (Thelma Plum made a cameo) version of the Stones song You Can't Always Get What You Want it's so much fun and goes down a treat with the crowd taking over the majority of vocal duties. Good times.

Maroochydore

Tonight is the final show of the tour and the last of 6 shows in a row. This is a sad moment because it means that one of the most amazing tours we have ever done is coming to an end. The venue is badass tonight and the room is full in no time. Blonde On Blonde do their thing and rip a rad cover of Regular John by QOTSA. So good. As with all last shows of tour, it's time for the pranks to come out. They do.  Whilst playing our track Werewolves, Ferg from Kingswood suddenly appears onstage in a werewolf mask and proceeds to make out with me. Wow. A first time for everything. We have our best show of the tour and our set ends with 30 girls gyrating on stage. A truly amazing sight. I should also add that the crowd tonight is literally 90% girls. This is an unexplained phenomenon but not one single complaint from either band.

We play a series of pranks during KW's set. They are as follows: Gaffer taping the kick pedal to the kick drum, pouring straight scotch down their throats at regular intervals, playing the sound of an orgasming girl extremely loud through their stage foldback (a personal favourite of mine) and introducing a didgeridoo to the band during their track Ohio. We finish up the night with both bands doing the Stones track and it's amazing. A full stage invasion occurs and there are bodies everywhere. We kick on a little after the show and try our best to avoid the inevitable goodbyes that are looming. We eventually get through it with lots of hugs and some serious bro down. We've made some new friends.

Thank you Kingswood you legends and thank you to everyone who came to a show. Both bands were blown away by the support. Rock'n'roll is alive.
