Less Talk More Dance

"An hour of dance with video and four back-up dancers."

More Dave Callan More Dave Callan

It's Dave Callan's opinion that the hour of sour and low-hanging fruit is over. "People be like 'political correctness has gone too far.' No, we just don't make fun of minorities or people who can't help the way they are. That time is gone."

With that ethos in mind, Callan's show for the Melbourne International Comedy Festivals requires he leap a little higher. "It's an hour of dance with video and four back-up dancers," says Callan, featuring "dance videos throughout time, but particularly from the golden age of choreography: 1996 - 2003".

"If you pour your heart and love and time into an hour it will be great," he believes."

With the byline 'Come laugh at a large viking taking dance routines a little too seriously,' it may all seem a little silly, but Callan is 100% committed. Putting the show together consisted of "dancing hard for so long that my legs went sore", and he's the first to extol the value of "Preparation!" when it comes to a show. "If you pour your heart and love and time into an hour it will be great," he believes. "Lack of prep is obvious and you will have a bad show."

That level of focus carries clear through to opening hour, when he likes "to do meditation and pranayamas, and have a small healthy snack and lots of water. But not so much," Callan adds, "that I'm distracted by needing to do pee".

You have to wonder what the demographic for this unique performance is. "I like dank audiences who are woke as and a little bit turnt," says Callan. If that's you get down there — the man says that if the audience leaves with anything other than laughs it'll be "boners".
